about me

hiii! my name is jane and i’m the girl behind not so plain jane (obviously)!!

not so plain jane is the manifestation of just a girl who likes to make stuff… and found out her friends like the stuff she makes too! it’s my inspiration come to life. it’s slow fashion that’s thoughtfully crafted to connect you with your inner spark. it’s all handmade on oahu in a way you can feel good about. it’s my passion project! and i know you’ll love what i’ve created.

i’ve always been drawn to creating in some way or another ever since i was a kid. i find fulfillment, satisfaction, and pride in making something myself instead of purchasing it brand new. when i was younger, what i was creating usually involved revamping what i already had, or using recycled or second hand materials… which meant i had to get VERY creative.

i reconnected with this younger, crafty version of myself when i was about 20. in college, i studied sustainability, where my area of passion was the fast fashion epidemic. the more i learned, the more i felt like this niche of sustainability was calling to me. buying clothes carried a new weight for me, and i felt a drive to do SOMETHING that didn’t contribute to a culture where mindless consumption of cheap products was so normalized.

right after college, i started working in environmental education & was creating like crazy in my free time. when my seasonal job came to an end, i moved out of my college town and headed to hawai'i to work on a coffee farm and learned a completely different field of sustainable practices - farming. throughout these years of change, the thing that has continued to ring true for years is that it's always better when you do it yourself! it tastes better when you eat local, it feels better when you know where your clothes are coming from, and your physical and mental environment is better when you are connected to what you consume.

turning off all outside noise and entering a state of flow, creating clothes has brought me so much joy and helped me find alignment between a passion and purpose. for me personally, there's no better way to be an advocate for slow fashion and sustainability than by creating my own clothes myself when i can.

if you're anything like me, then you know exactly what i mean when i say life feels more abundant when you are connected with what you consume and can feel a deep and true gratitude for it. in a world of endless microtrends and mass consumption, it feels grounding to slow down and create instead.

let me remind you that ALL clothing is handmade - not just mine. where you put your money is where you put your support. make sure that support aligns with your values because damn right it matters.

i hope you too can feel the love that’s in every single one of my handmade pieces, and feel good wearing it.

xoxo jane
